Architecture and Environment
This module focuses on how architecture impacts the environment, both positively and negatively. It aims to help student understand how to create design that responses to local climate and allow occupants to feel comfortable in the building.
Assignment 1: case study - assessing daylight and thermal comfort a modern house
In this assignment students were tasked to identify 2 issues in a modern house which are daylighting and thermal comfort. All information and data must be recorded, and method evaluation of these conditions must be stated too. We then needed to propose at least one solution for each issue in the form of passive design.
This was a group assignment, my group consisted of:
- Foo She-Qi
- Yvette Y E Lim
- Loke Wyn Ken
- Colin Jonathan Susan
- Lucas Leong Chan Nam
- Elliot Saburo Ting Hua Qing

It was my first time working with the Juniors, Initially it was difficult to break the barrier but by taking more initiative to open up, eventually we were all comfortable in working together
We applied our understanding in passive design and attempted to practice the theory. We made some errors here and there but our tutor helped to guide us back on track.
This assignment was a solution centric exercise so It trained us to think critically on how to resolve the issue regarding thermal comfort and daylighting.
Assignment 2: artificial lighting design
In the next assignment we were to choose a 10m x 6m space and design the artificial lighting needed there using the lumen calculation, the lighting design was shown in a reflected ceiling plan that contained the types of light, switches and looping. This was also a group project and my team members were:
- Foo She-Qi
- Yvette Y E Lim
- Loke Wyn Ken
- Colin Jonathan Susan
- Lucas Leong Chan Nam
- Elliot Saburo Ting Hua Qing

We needed to figure out the appropriate looping method and how to construct a reflected ceiling plan, these were new to us.
We applied our knowledge in lumen method calculations that we learned.
Thinking was required when figuring out the suitable lighting layout since there were many possibilities. We picked the one that was most efficient and appropriate for the given space.
